My husband has a Fordson Major Diesel Tractor. The tractor quit running and we had the fuel pump rebuilt, starter rebuilt and it still would not start. Now they say it has a cracked block. any ideas where to get a block? The number on the block is EIADKN6015. It has Power Major on it, a 220 motor. We believe it was a 1958 to 1961 model. Any help would be appreciated.

The guy working on the tractor said it had a crack from piston to piston. He also said the engine needs to be rebuilt. He quoted a price of $2200 for the rebuild without the block.

What other motor would fit in this tractor? We are having a hard time finding parts. We had to send the starter and the fuel pump in to be rebuilt and now the block is messed up. We were told that we would not be able to find a block.

Think I would question the mechanic closely. The block cannot crack from "piston to piston". The engine is a wet sleeve type. The sleeves may crack, the block may crack but both these items are pretty rare. Neither will prevent the engine from starting. She will either get water in the oil or will blow water out of the radiator but she will still start and run.

I have had a liner break on a similar engine and the water went everywhere but you do not report this happening.

In 40 years of working with this engine I have never heard of the problems you are reporting and I have rebuilt hundreds of these engines. But they can still throw up the odd problem.

Just a few posts down there is a block/complete engine for sale. Bare-co and Sparex have most of the parts off the shelf. All engines for Fordson tractors and trucks will fit. there are even combines and other items fitted with it. There were hundreds of thousands of them made.

Hello Majorman,
I have Forson Major Disel with Water leaking to Oil via the Block. I guess its a sleeve seal. Since you have much experience with these motors, could you give your opinion on what to look for? Is this a common fault in an old fordson? the tractor had not been run for about 5 years prior to my aquiring it, so I guess it could be well rusted inside the block water jacket.
Cheers

The number you want is stamped under No 1 injector. This will give the date of the tractor. Post it here.

A cracked block will not cause the tractor not to start. With a cracked block you will find water in the sump.

If you have had the pump rebuilt I would suspect that you have fitted it back 180 degrees out.

This is quite easy to do as the timing marks line up in two places.

Reset her to 23 degrees in the window under the side rail, line up the mark on the pump coupling, now check if the pinch bolt that holds the drive coupling on the shaft is above or below the shaft.

If it is above the shaft the engine pump timing is 180 degrees out. Remove the pump, turn the engine 360 degrees and re aline the 23 degree mark. You should now see the pinch bolt below the drive shaft. Refit the pump. She should start.

He wants to sell this tractor or the parts. Where do I post this at?
