I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS TRACTOR WITH AN ATTACHED BUSH-HOG WHICH IT SEEMS TO HANDLE QUITE WELL. HOWEVER, IT IS NECESSARY TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE IN ORDER TO ENGAGE THE BUSH-HOG. PUSHING COMPLETELY DOWN ON THE CLUTCH WILL NOT DISENGEGE THE PTO SHAFT . IS THERE NOT A TWO STAGE CLUTCH , OR IS THIS JUST A PROBLEM WITH A SINGLE STAGE CLUTCH THAT IS OUT OF ADJUSTMENT ? WHEN ENGAGING THE TRANSMISSION THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS NEARLY ALL THE WAY UP BEFORE THE CLUTCH ENGAGES.

To answer your question we need more information. There were at least three different types of Major in the period you specify.

Post the serial number that is under No.1 Injector stamped in the block or behind the starter stamped in the flange, or on the little plate rivited to the front of the firewall.

It sounds as if your clutch is possibly a live one but we need to be sure.
