i have a 56 major the shifter keeps popping out of the linkage, this was a known issue when i first got this unit, is there anything that holds the shifter in? basicall it just looks like a ball and socket? also i have replaced the radiator hoses, the former owner had made a clamp with a piece of wood under it on the fill hose, evidently this was to hold the fill hose to the fill spout (spout for lack of a better word) when i removed this clamp and tried to clamp the new hose to the spout, the spout just pops off, as there is no flange on the spout to keep the hose on? - any ideas? what would keep the fill spout from being forced up and off the hose once the clamp is tightened?? thanks

You need to build a little weld on the bottom of the gear shift. Its a common problem. If you make it slightly longer it will hold in.

There is only a small flange on the filler neck. Think I would try a new hose. Yours may have aged.

I had a similar problem with a bypass hose on another make and ended up holding it up to the flange with cable ties whilst I tightened the hose clip.

majorman, thanks i'll try the welding technique, as for the hose it's brand new, the filler neck has no flange on it what-so-ever, it is possible that the former owner changed it and or modified it over the years? there doesn't seem to be anything holding the filler neck in, as it just floats free.
