I have a 1955 Fordson Major....Need some help. I can start the tractor, but it blows white smoke and is missing very badly. I was told that I may have an injector pump timing problem. How would I diagnose the problem...Thanks.

Thanks Guys, I will try the injector test. To add a few more things....I did remove all the injectors and had them cleaned. Waiting to get them back. The Technician explained to me that he tested all the injectors prior to cleaning them...they all fired ok and the nozzles appreared to be good. Prior to the injector work, I drained the water from the block and radiator. I ran the engine for 30 secs....no change in the white smoke and misses. I started the engine up two weeks later and had the same results.

I would not touch the timeing at all. Blowing white smoke and missing is more likely a head gasket problem. Timing would not cause the engine to miss.

Gaffers' check will be a good starting place then check the radiator and sump for water. If two cylinders show up faulty the head gasket is blown between the two.

tj1963,
As a rough check of injector condition, run engine just above idling speed and loosen injector lines one at a time, and then retighten. As each injector is cut out in this way, a definite drop-off in noise/speed should be noticed if the injector is operating properly. When you come across the one that does nothing thats the faulty one. Try this above before adjusting the timming
