Hello - I just found this forum and am hoping someone here might be able to assist me. I just looked at a 1960 Fordson Dexta 957E tractor owned by an old farmer. It's not in great shape, doesn't run and looks like there are some parts missing, but he's very attached to it and isn't sure he'd like to sell it. However, he did tell me he'd think about it. I'd like to go back and make him an offer, but I have no idea how much it might be worth. Can anyone give me an idea of how much this model of tractor usually sells for (in any shape)? I don't want to insult him with a low offer, but I also don't want to highball it. It's the perfect size for me and I like that it's a diesel.

He's probably just trying to protect you from problems you might have with it. He may have gotten an estimate on repairs and figures it's not worth fixing. Tell him you'll give him more than a salvage buyer, but not a lot more. That might salve his conscience. You can buy good 135 Massey Fergusons, or Ford 3 cyl tractors in the $6000 range. This Dexta, while parts are available, may need $600 worth of tires, $2000 worth of engine repairs, and 1000's of cosmetic work, depending how nice you want it to look. Probably worth under $1000 as it sits.
It is kind of a nice little tractor. I just bought one to fix up that cost me about the price I stated. I'll probably have $1500 more in it, plus paint, before it looks good. Painting is expensive. I also own a 1971 3000 Ford gas and that's my favorite.
