I am reparing a pre 1965 Fordson dexta. It hadn't ran in about 3 years until I got it going. It runs fine at lower engine speeds but when I try to "open it up" it starts missing at higher r.p.m. If it was a gas burner I would say it acts as if it was flooding. When it starts this missing it white smokes badly. It is also difficult to start when the engine is "cold". Makes no difference of weather conditions it takes a while to start. After the first start it will then start quickly over and over. I have changed the filters, put in new diesel, cleaned the air filter but still misses. Any body have any idea as to what my problem may be? Thanks, Greg

Hi I have noticed that when my Dexta's battery is down not to low she will blow out white smoke for a several turns then start. With a fully charged battery she will start almost immediately.

I have also noticed that every so on she will blow out a puff of black smoke, almost a miss fire. Could that be a injector or injector pump problem? I'm hoping not as I had them all overhauled.

I nterserted to hear your comments.

Regards
Mervyn

The symptoms you describe are like that of an ether baby Perkins. Mine did this before rebuild, sickly and low power, hard to start. Finally had to use a propane torch to heat the intake thru the glow plug hole to get her to fire. Mine would over-rev (pneumatic govenor - your's has manual, so won't over-rev). When I pulled the pistons, the rings fell out like shelled corn. I hardly could believe it would have run that way. After rebuild bump - she starts, and full power and no odd smoke.

Fordson Dexta and Super Dexta production finished in June 1964 and they were repalced by the Ford 2000 Dexta and the Ford 3000 Dexta. These are two completely different tractors with different engines.

Your misfire problems if related to the earlier Fordson Dexta range could be due to fuel being drawn into the intake manifold via the cold start feed pipe. A small tap is usually fitted to this close to the manifold and should be turned off after use.

If your problem is on the later range some times advancing the pump timing one degree can help cure it.

Ford also fitted "anti flutter valves" to the injection pump where the injector pipes fit. These are a banjo bolt with a high head as opposed to the flat head that were used in early production. they are simple to change and are available from Case New Holland.

Cold starting problems can be cured by installing a cold start unit to the intake manifold near the rubber connection at the front. This can be identified by a pipe and wire at the back of the manifold or just a plug if one is not fitted. the cold start is worked by the ignition key.
