I have a 53 Major Diesel and having trouble with traction. I do antique tractor pulling with this tractor and the rpms are set according to the operator"s manual. I am running 15.5-38s on 14in rims. I am always spinning out but I never power out the engine. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Terry

I have done a ton of tractor pulling. The trick is getting the majority of the weight on the rear tires of the tractor. This is called a weight transfer. You can do this in several ways.

1. Adjust the height and length of you drawbar. 2. Move weight from the front to the back of the tractor.
3. Pull in a heaver class and put more weight on the back.

You want the front end to float on the ground. Use a front weight bracket that is 11 feet from the rear axle so you don't have to put as much weight on the front end to keep it down.

Do not use new tires for antique tractor pulling. Try to use old hard sharp cut tires that are a straighter angle. Example coop agra power/field and roads. Try to use a 4 ply tire and drop the air pressure down to 10 or 12 lbs. You can adjust your air pressure for the track you are pulling on. You may want to go to a 16.9 or 14.9 38 tire. They are both taller than a 15.5 38. You will get a faster ground speed. I am not a fan of using the 15.5 38’s for pulling, but I know one guy that makes them work on a Moline.

The hitch is set at 18" off ground and 18" from center of axle according to our club's rules. I thought I would try the 15.5-38s since the 16.9-30s I was running would always spin out. I was running the amount of tire pressure you mentioned. Any other help would be appreciated.

I would try lengthening the drawbar. I am able to run mine 20" high acording to our rules. I run it about 25" long. On most tracks the front will barely come off the ground. This is in the 5000 pound class with no weight on the front.

I agree with rkm. This will help you get more transfer on a tractor with a heavy front end.

Other options to consider:

1. Both sets of tires you used may be too big for 5000! The can sit on the top and spin out. A 13.6 38 for 5000 lbs class would be a good tire on a hard pulling track. The guys I know that uses the 15.5 38's pulls in the 6500 and 7500 lbs. I pulled in 3500 through 5500 lbs class with a WC Allis with 12.4 28 rear tires and placed consistently for many years on hard pulling tracks. (It had 50HP) I tried 18.4 26 and spun out every time.

2. Increase engine RPM's, pull in a higher gear, or use taller tires to get a faster ground speed if the rules allow.
