I have a broken head bolt on my Fordson model N.
The tractor was running and when I got off to walk around it I saw the head bolt in the center of the head sticking up about 1 inch. I was able to pull it out of the head. I found no threads at the end. It was broken off at the threads. No water or compression leaking from the hole. How does a bolt just brake like that? Can I remove the remaining threads with out removing the head?

I was able to remove the broken part of the head bolt this after noon. I used a transfer punch to get the center and made a drilling guide to keep the drill bit straight. It was some hard drilling but the broken portion came out nicely. I did this with out removing the head .Where can I get a replacement head bolt? Fordson House? Can I use a grade 8 from Home Depot?

If this was my tractor I would attempt to remove the bolt w/out removing the head.Ridgid makes a bolt extractor set that has drill guides ,drills and splined extractors that I have had good success with. You must use precisely the correct size drill for each spline. The spline is driven in after having drilled the hole then a splined hex collar is fitted over the extractor.CAUTION. If you use this system, use only socket or box wrench on the hex collar to avoid unequal load and possible crushing of the collar.I speak from experience! If you can use an appropriate drill guide ,first shot then you should be able to step up to a larger drill without a guide.Snap-On sells this same tool and possibly other tool companys also at a higher price. In any event do not even consider EZE OUT unless you want to hate yourself later.

Thanks Chief. My neighbor has the set you spoke about. I was going to give them a try.
