Just a quick question, I have my eyes set on a 1941 Ford 9N for $2000 that is in very good condition, I am dead tired of steering my FSM through trees, my lagoon, and nearly tipped into a ditch, its too big for small 6 acre mowing....lol I want to sell my 62, it runs good, starts easy, but has been modified, it has a cone air filter replacing the oil bath, an electric fuel pump bypassing the mechanical one, and push button start instead of a key. Other than that is runs ok, hydraulics work great, decent tires. Paint is rough, but runs ok, what can I expect to get out of it as far as US dollars. I live in south central Kansas and will probably run an ad on eBay, I REALLY would like to get enough out of it to purchase the Ford 9N. Any Thoughts?

Wish you were closer to my neck of the woods. I would trade you a great running 9N for your FSM. I like the 9N, but it is a little light for the hills around here, and the front end likes to keep coming off the ground. Very easy to work on, and a handy wagon mover and brush hogger!
As far as the Dexta is concerned, they are the best small tractor I know of. Would like to get one myself, but they are few and far between around here, and the few I have seen have been very expensive.
A few 9N notes: Try to get a later one with the side distributor, check the brakes over closely (these little tractors seem to love axel seals), and be prepared to feed it often. When running at work speeds, they really drink the gas.

A 9N as a mowing tractor really needs the ORC and a Zane Thang--to provide position control. Or get a 8N it has position controll. Live hydraulics is a nice feature too but that didn't come till the NAA (Jubilee). Keep going like this though and pretty quick your into $10,000.00 tractors. For maintaining 10 acres or less a Major is way too much and an old N will do you proud.
If you get an old 8N and don't like it--they will sell better than ANY other used tractor.

9N ??Re: Selling 62 FSM in reply to daveywavey, 09-23-2006 08:55:09
Well you could very disappointed with that tractor after having the SMD. If you want a GREAT little tractor keep your eye peeled for a Fordson Dexta or a MF 35 Diesel perkins 3cyl. Sip fuel, Both have live power available most have it. The MF35 later models have the axel lock. Some Dextas also but are rare. I bought a Dexta in good condition for $1000. a MF35 D3 for $1500. Whatever you do dont get a 4 cyl diesel in the MF 35. The Standard was a real dawg. with live power and axel lock. If you want to sell the Major Local use Craigs list or on YT Photo. At least it wont cost you an extra 10% to sell it. PS SMD aircleaner is great Thanks

I am worried it may not have enough power. What things might I be dissapointed in? I am not too intersted in doing heavy labor anyways, mainly mowing every week or so, all 6-7 acres, maybe tow a small trailer load of fire wood, light plowing, and blading snow and dirt off my dirt road driveway. Will a 9N handle this type of light work? I have been researching other alternatives,I am not hard nosed dead set on any certain brand, although another Fordson would be great. Ive looked at Farmalls, and Massey Harris'
I really want a 9N or 8N, they look neat, do light work, and would be 10 times easier to split and work on. What do you think?

One would be power the second will be GASS consumption especialy mowing. Either the MF35D3
or the diesel Dexta will handle all of the things on 6 acreslus the fuel cost will be 1/2 of the 8/9n ford. And being of nearly of the same size will handle as good as or better than the OLD Ford.
The next thing is the live power almost an esential. Plus MF35 and Dexta have 2 speed trans which give you 2 reverse another feature in mowing.
My opinion is that the older FMD Dexta and MF35 are good tractors as the maitence dont get much esier thn these for diesels.
I dont know about your state but FARM Diesel fuel is about $,75 less than gasoline or road diesel.
Than little Ford can eat the fuel for it size and a diesel will pay for itself soon.

PS I think Dextas in the USA are under priced as they have the name of Fordson and hard to get some parts but the truth is that for an old tractor they just dont need much and all the consumable engine parts are available from this web site YT tractors

Hey Woodache,

There is a 1961 MF35 and a 1951 TO30 coming up for auction next in my area. The 35 is a 3 cylinder perkins which I have been reading is a very good engine. I do not know the hours or condition of either as the auctioneer does not have a web site.

What would you say a deal would be either of those girls without knowing any information ( I know a tough question to answer )?? The reason I asking about what a deal is that I have two tractors and do not need another another and was thinking about maybe picking them up for resale.

Thanks,

Scott

As users Re: 9N ??Re: Selling 62 FSM - MF Question in reply to morningwood, 09-23-2006 17:04:04
I only think in terms of users only. So the 51 TO30 is out But the 35 if Decent alaround a deal may be under $2000. If in need of major repair you will need to deduct that cost.

Yeah, Id like 2K but would settle for less. I have read up on the ORC for the 9N, as a bush hog tends to make a tractor go, even when the clutch is depressed.lol. Well Ill put my ole FSM on ebay and see what happens. If anyone is interested on this forum, make me an offer, I may just well take it...lol. As long as its reasonable. I cannot ship it or transport it, it would be pickup only. Just thought Id give some of you guys who enjoy Fordsons a chance to make an offer. I like the tractor, it has monster pulling power, but its bulky size is a disadvantage to me.

I have been watching them on ebay for a few years now. There was a running major that went for 700$ in California. There is a major on there now that had a broken block that is going for descent money. I hate to say this but you would be very lucky to get 2k out of it. You might be well aware of this but make sure when you get that 9n to get a override clutch for the PTO as it does not have Live PTO.

I think Fordsons are a very mis-understood tractor in the US so that why people do not put down the $$$ like they would for the green paint. In England they hold there value pretty well. I talked to a die hard tractor guy and he told green paint goes to the head.
