I've just bought a Fordson Major and the PTO was leaking. I took off the PTO casing and found two oil seals and a fabric bush, there was also a chewed up oil seal. Would any one know how many oil seals there are meant to be?
The oil seals I took out are:
Apache 145SP887
Amaand 400918. TC1.500 - 2.500 - 0.37 – 3

I’m trying to get as much info on it as possible the codes I have are
PTO: EIADKN7263
Above PTO: EIADKN 995203
Engine cast: DDN F F:X
I couldn’t find any serial numbers behind the starter on the flange or under No.1 Injector.

Also do I use 20 – 40w oil?

Any help would be great as I’m new to all this.
Thanks Russell

Good afternoon

I have not had any luck trying to get a straight answer out of my local tractor shops. Some have said one seal and another has said 2 seals and neither really match the seals I have taken off. Please could you let me know the correct size for the oil seal?

The oil seals I took out are:
Apache 145SP887
Amaand 400918. TC1.500 - 2.500 - 0.37 – 3

Thank you Russell

There should be just one seal in the rear PTO which has a felt dust seal and an oil seal in one metal housing.

The numbers you posted are just casing part numbers and the same on every Major. The casting code will be something like A12B.

If you have no numbers on the engine this is strange as even industrial units had numbers stamped on them. However if it has had a new block the number may not have been transfered. Try the small square plate on the front of the firewall.

20/40W would be OK in rear axle and gearbox but it would need to be a diesel engine oil in the engine. HD20/40W.

Thank you for your quick response.
After a lot more cleaning I found the serial number on the flange behind the starter. I can"t make out one of the numbers, its 1080167 or 1480167.
The engine number is H24B. Which in the site you recommended (http://fordson.freeweb.nl/) said it was made on June 24th 1958.

Thank you

Yes she was built in July 1958 according to the serial number, making her one of the last Fordson Major Diesel's built before the change to the Power Major.
