I have developed a hole in the head of my petrol major. It is in the exhaust port of no 2 and can be seen easily looking into the port. It is about the size of a pen and their is still a fair bit to weld to. Can it be welded up or will it keep cracking.

Could you please clarify what you're talking about? Do you mean a hole in the exhaust manifold? If you really mean the head, I don't understand. Is the exhaust eating away the metal until you are into the water passages?, Or is the water eating away the head into the exhaust passage, like from cavitation? Picture would be helpful. Is this a known weakness?

the hole is in the head allowing water to enter the exhaust port. could not tell you from which side it has developed.

Think I would take it to a specialist welder if it were mine. I would also be looking out for another head.

I theory it could be welded but these castings tend to crystalise with the continual heating and cooling over the years and become very fragile. IMHO.

Good luck.
