I am the new owner of a Fordson Super Major which I beleive is a 1964 model. I am replacing the rear axle lubricant and am getting different opinions from different people. The first one advises me to use 80W90 lubricant ( 41 litres) and the second tells me that I should be using trans hydraylic fluid. I am located in Quebec so temperatures get down to -40 during the winter. any answer to my dilemna? thanks

I have a Power Major ( basically the same tractor ) and also just changed all of my lubricants. It should take approximately 15 US gallons. You can use anything from 15w-40, 20w-50 to SAE 30,40. I personally used 15w-40 as it was cheaper by 5$ cheaper per 5 gallon pal and I plan on running the tractor some in the winter.

The dip stick next to the PTO engagement lever will show you how much oil is in the back end which should be approximately 10 gallons. There is no dip stick for the front, you just need to fill it until it almost starts running out.

Thanks,

Scott

Forgot to add a few things to my earlier post.

After you drain all of you oil out of the rear end you should clean out the screen in the bottom of the sump. There are no filters that need to be changed.

On my Power Major I have three hoses coming out of the valve chest that are used to run implements. One of my hoses does not have a cap or quick disconnect on it. If you have two hoses you can remove one of the quick disconnects and have the tractor pump most of the oil out for you, just don't pump her totally dry.

Hi:

The Fordson unlike other tractors like the Massey Ferguson has two compartments, one for the gearbox and one for the final drive (differential).

The filler plug for the Diff is at the back of the seat on the cover that carries the rear lift arms. the dip stick for the rear diff is on the left side of the main gear shift lever. Do not overfill.

The filler plug for the gearbox is on the left side of the tractor just infront of the clutch pedal, when you are sitting in the seat The fill mark is etched into the casing.

Both compartments take SAE 30 oil.

Hope this helps and clarifies the matter

Kenneth

Hi:

I have a 1964 FSM also. The oil should be straight SAE 30

That is what I use in mine, I live in Halifax, NS and have not had any problems. The thicker oil such as 90 gear oil was used in the earlier tractors. Also, I think hydraulic fluid could mess up your seals.

There have been several discussions on the forum as to what oil to use, check the archives and you will get the responses of those who are very knowlegeable.

Thanks for your answer; just to make sure, there is a plug behind the seat and there is another one on the right of the seat just in front of the hydraulic shaft which I beleive is the one leading to the axle. If I understand correctly, we are talking about filling the one at the back with 41 liters of grade 30 oil. and I would use the same type lubricant for the other plug as well.
thanks again for your help
