Can someone tell me what mags fit an F Fordson ? Am looking at a Wico AP 33c ? Is there a particular one that is better or easier to maintain ? Too many for my little brain.. Thanks

There were a number of aftermarket kits to fit either governors or magnetos in place of the timer. The trouble is, the timer drive wasn't designed to transmit much power and it might not lubricate the gears very well. The later Model N had a casting change so that an external magneto and governor could be properly installed. The Wico and Fairbanks Morse were very popular mags. The Model N used either a Bosch or Lucas magneto. I've often thought the mag from a Farmall F20 was very reliable. Make sure they rotate the right way.

Are you saying that if it turns the right way, clockwise?, and fits, any mag should work ?

That's more or less true. You have to have the magneto "click over" at the right instant. So the gearing ratio and indexing have to be right. Some magnetos have speed reducers inside them, so they probably have an input speed equal to the crankshaft speed. It's possible some are direct. You can take the cap off and watch the rotor turn while you turn the input shaft. To sum it up, the rotor has to rotate at 1/2 crankspeed. The ignition impulse has to happen just as the piston gets to the top dead center. Usually you can fine-tune by rotating the points or the whole magneto.
