Hello!
I am currently looking at an old Fordson Major and trying to decide if it's worth buying as a work machine. I understand the clutch needs replacing: can anybody give me any idea how big a job this is? Is it just like on a car? I have lots of experience of working on cars, none on tractors. Are there any other points I should look out for on this model?
Many thanks in advance,
J-P

JP,
The clutch replacement on an FMD or Super Major is a simple operation similar to that of a car. ONLY THREE TO FOUR TIMES HEAVIER. You would need some form of support for the engine that can be moved. A crane on wheels or a trolley to support under the rear of the sump. I have done it with a tractor and loader.
Drive tractor onto a smooth level surface.
Block the rear wheels.Apply the brakes.
Disconnect all fuel pipes including the leak back to tank pipe on the cylinder head, and cables. Support the gear box housing with a bottle jack rather than a trolley jack (as these tend to move). Place blocks under the bell houseing as additional safety measure. Support the rear of the engine. Remove the eight side channel bolts (four either side) and the ring of bolts around the bell houseing leaving two accessable ones in place. Do not forget the two that are under the channels facing the other way. Many a sump has been broken as people use a crowbar to prise the two halves of the tractor appart without removing these. When sure that all is disconnected and the tractor halves are well supported, remove the last two bolts. Gently ease the two halves appart. Check that the gap between the two halves is equal at all times. Remove and replace the clutch including the thrust bearing. Put the tractor in gear and then push the two halves back together. Check the clearance around the flange of the bell houseing and engine as these must be equal all the way around. Push the two halves together and turn the flywheel with a screw driver until the splines in the clutch and on the gearbox shaft meet and engage. Wriggle the two halves together right up to the dowels, replace the bolts on either side and gently pull the two halves together. Do not under any circumstances use draw bolts as, damage to the new clutch disc can take place if the splines are not in line and the bolts are tightened. Replace all parts removed.

BE CAREFULL. Get help. Do not try and rush it. If you know about vehicles I realise that you need no reminding of safety but others who may attempt this do. Its an easy job when you know how.It is also easy to injure yourself if the tractor comes off the supports. Perhaps what is more important. You may damage your tractor:)
regards
Brian

Thanks Brian for taking the time and trouble to give me such a thorough reply!

PS. Just out of interest, this machine is fitted with live hydraulics in the manner described under the thread "can I fit live hydraulics". The pump is on the front of the machine, as is a large fluid resevoir and counterweight. The hydraulics are for a backhoe.

Hi,

Do you have the technology to send me a picture of how the live hydraulics are set up on your tractor? Also, can you see any identifying marks on the pump? Any help you can give me is appreciated

Thanks,
Karl

Hi Karl
As you will see from my first post, the tractor isn't mine yet! Next time I go to look it over, I will make a point of checking the new hydraulic pump etc and will let you know if I find out anything useful. Of course if it comes to pass that I actually buy the machine then perhaps I can be more help. Cheers for now, J-P
