Another way to determine the difference is to measure the distance the clutch fork pivot shaft is from the front of the transmission. On a two stage tractor it is about 1,1/4" further back to allow for the deeper/thicker pressure plate assembly. For that reason a two stage clutch will not work in a single stage transmission housing. I learned the hard way.

Fordson Majors with 2 stage clutch can be determined by the HI/low shift lever.
hi/low lever up low range =single stage
hi/low lever up high range= 2stage you have to be able to drive tractor to determin
wich position move you at higher speed.

Here goes:
Engage your PTO. With your transmission in gear you should not be able to turn your PTO shaft by hand. Then press your clutch in about half way. With a dual clutch you should now be able to turn your PTO shaft by hand. Pressing the clutch all the way in your wheels should turn. Of course to test that your tractor whould need to be jacked up. My 1957 Fordson Power Major has the two clutch system which went bad. I had it professionally rebuilt for $800.00. Best tractor ever made in my opinun.

I agree the best tractor made for their Era with a undeserved bad reputation, But then again lets just keep it a secret so that we can still buy them at a resonable price, sometimes cheap, ;)) a real good oldie that is still affordable. With tech advances way ahead of its time
