I have started work on a 1930 Fordson and am wondering what color scheme it had. My gas tank had green paint as did the radiator. Wheels must have been red.

At it's introduction in 1929 the Model "N" retained the colour scheme of it's predecessor the Fordson "F" and only after the move from Cork to Dagenham did the colour scheme change to blue in 1933. It changed again to orange in 1937 and then changed to green in 1939 during the second world war.

Therefore kingmondo your Fordson N should be blue.

BWT

Green was used after about 1940 to stop the Luftwaffe using them for target practice whilst waiting shipment. Your tractor should have "Made by Ford Motor Company Ltd Cork Ireland" written on the tank if made 1929/30 or "Ford Motor Company Ltd England Made in Irish Free State" if 1930/32 The colour was Grey with Red wheels like a U.S. made model F. An American Bosch magneto was fitted and a govenor was optional equipment.

The gas tank has Fordson made by Ford Motor Company Detroit Michigan. It has a Robert Bosch magneto. Believe serial number behind the manifold was 757800. Thank you for your reply.

The last tractor built at Dearborn was 747681 in 1928 when tractor production there ceased and was transfered to cork. Year 1930 started tractor #757369 to #772564, so 757800 is a 1930 Cork built engine. It could have had another tank fitted, or has a later engine been fitted to a model F?, does it have the cast front wheels or the model F spoked wheels?

I am not up much on Fordsons. The front wheels are cast with what I would call 5 large spokes. I don`t think I mentioned before that it has a water pump if that helps.

Yes, those are Cork front wheels, you have a 1930 Cork built Fordson model N. It sounds as if it has had a tank from a model F fitted at some time in its 76 year life. As another post said the Cork tractors had a beefed up transmission so the rear axle castings differ from the model F, also the front axle is different to the F as the engine front casting was different to accomodate the Mag drive. You have quite a rare tractor especialy if you are in the States. There was a book in publication called " Fordson Model N 1929-45 its by Allan T. Condie. ISBN 0 907742.35 1. If you can get a copy it shows in dietail what the tractor originally was fitted with.

Thank you again for the Fordson education. As you have probably guessed I am in the states - namely west central Minnesota. It is always nice to find out that something a person has is out of the ordinary. Bought it by accident at a salvage yard on a day I had no intention of buying a tractor.

Sounds like a 1940 paint scheme. Does your tractor draw air in through the steering column, or through a vertical pipe fitted to an oil-bath aircleaner?

It draws air in through a waterbath and has a Robert Bosch magneto. Steel wheels of course. Serial number is behind the manifold. Believe it was 757800.

The Robert Bosch FU4B is the correct mag for the Irish Fordson. The clutch pedal position is forward of the axle as on the early Fordson and not behind the axle as on the later English. After 75 years colors don't mean much. I have an English Fordson painted John Deere colors. It would have been a very light grey. Much lighter than the Early tractors. Red wheels. The round air washer was used until 1937 when the oil bath air cleaner came in. Irish air came into the washer through the bottom while the English came down thru the steering column. Irish rear axle housings are unique in that they had a axle oiling system and the housings had to be assembled in the correct position and are labeled "UP". By this time there may be any kind of feul tank. However the correct are mentioned above. Enough rambling on my part, Good luck, Butch

Thsnk you very much for your input. Maybe this summer I can hear some of that gear noise that I have been warned about.
