I want to buy an equipment trailer for my Fordson Power Major, but I don't know how much trailer to buy because I don't know the weight of the great beast. Any help would be greatly appreciated. D.L. May, Bellingham, Washington, USA

My Major weighs 4900lbs. with pressed steel front wheels, no fluid in tires, and no wheel weights. Rear wheel weights are about 100lbs. each, and fluid in the tires would add a substantial amount more.

an 8000 pound tandam axle trailer with brakes is just about right for a major, i think that a major could weigh about 6000 to 6500 with front wheel weights and fluid in the tires. you always want to leve a little lee-way to be on the safe side.

The hand book lists the tractor at just over 4000lbs or about two tons. However, this does not include water in the tyres or any aditional balast such as rear wheel weights. I recently transported my Super Major on a three ton flat bed truck. It was not comfortable. Here in Australia the FMD/FPM/FSM has 750x16 solid cast front wheels and the rear wheels are a lot wider than the English ones (18.4x28 tyres) with a two piece cast iron centre. When I called into a tractor wreckers on the way home, the guy laughed at me and said I had about three and a half ton on the back.

Given that US Fordsons apear to have the same rear wheels as the UK models and pressed steel front wheels, with water balast, fuel and oil I would say about 2 & 1/2 to 2 3/4 tons. Add about 300lbs if you have rear wheel weights. I would not consider anything less than a three ton capacity trailer.

The safest bet is to take it to your nearest weigh bridge to get a more acurate figure. Also, consider the addition of any implements you may have attached.
