Hi Gang;
This is my 1954 KFD 68 orchard Major. KFD = Kent Ford dealers a group of 4 dealers in the southeast of England who wanted a narrow & a low tractor to work in orchards & hop fields.
Stormont Engineering one of the 4 constructed some 300 of these tractors from 1952 to 57. They then manufactured the narrow Dexta which Ford sold direct to dealers.
This model 68 is normal width, but is lowered with 28 inch rear wheels. Note the special swept back cast iron front axle to reduce the turning circle.
They made a model 52 which was narrowed to 52 inches wide and small rear wheels & swept back axle.
All of these tractors are very rare to-day, less than 30 still exist.
Cheers David

Hi Scot;
Yes the basic model KFD68 is identical to a normal Major except for the front axle, smaller wheels & shortened steering arm.
The model KFD52 is quite different, they shortened the half shafts down to give an overall 52" width. They fitted dual braking, 1 - single pedal brake to work on both rear wheels for stopping. Then the steering brakes are worked by levers which come up the side of the fenders and operated by hand. The hydraulic lift lever is fitted infront of the seat and the lift lever is between your legs ! The front axle is narrowed and swept back, so the steering assembly is more complicated, and never worked well in service.
Will get photo taken when I see one in the steel to post here for you.
If you want more photos pleaase email me and I will send you some via email.

David,

Does the tractor use the same engine, transmission as the Major does ?

Is the only real difference in the height and front end ?

Scott
