Cold start for a Super major

I have a solid rebuilt 1962 Super major engine in one of my 1954 Majors. Turns over well, has good compression, but takes a while to fire and get going in sub freezing temp. On my other 1954 major, there is a lever on the injector pump body that you pull out for cold weather starting, but there is no such lever on the Super major pump. Should there be one? Or is there some other lever, switch or trick that I do not know about?
Your help appreciated, thank you.

Hi;
I have 1954 Major Diesel & 1961 Super Major both with original engines & injection pumps.
The earlier pump - pull out lever on pump to activate "cold start".
Late SM pump, small button on end of lever on pump push in.
Cheers David

David,

I am in Ohio also and I had a pretty hard time starting my PM when it was 40 degrees out and this is after a fresh overhaul. I have only put about 10 hours on the overhaul.

With the cold temperatures that we have been having I would use a block heater or a radiator heater to help cold starting the tractor.

I was just looking at them myself because I would like to get some logs pulled out of my woods before the ground thaws. This site and a few other sell magnetic block heaters or radiator heaters that you put inline with your cooling system.

I have a diesel truck ( 06 duramax ) and I was plugging it in every night for about a week there just to help with coldstarting. The truck has glow plugs and a grid heater in the intake manifold to help with coldstarting also.

Scott

My 1962 Super Major is a good starter, though I've not tried to start it in sub-zero temps. It will fire up readily down into the twenties and teens, however. I use no ether or other starter fluids, and even though it's got a block warmer, I don't have to use it. There is no lever on the injector pump.

If it is new enough to have the Minimec fuel pump, the throttle shaft is hollow and the enrichment button fits into the end of it. The vaccume governed pumps were all pretty much alike. Most older (and most all newer) diesels can be tough to start in subzero temps. If you MUST use a "spray aid" WD 40 works and is a bit kinder to your engine than ether.
