Many conversions have taken place so don't assume any thing. Look for clues. To my knowledge many DC starting motors would run backwards on reverse polarity. It's not that time running will actually engage anything but commutators and brushes take a set and if run backwards little parts are ground off the brushes into the commutator spaces causing like a short. Additionally certain diodes and other governing react to hostile environment by blowing.

It should be pos. ground, but it shouldn't matter, the starter will still start the engine with the battery hooked up either way. It won't charge if the generator isn't polarized the same way as the battery, but it will start. Check and clean all of your wiring connections and make sure the switch on the starter is closing when you push the starter lever.
