I m still working on my major diesel, replaced head gasket and got new injectors, Less smoke now but still smoking quite alot more than the other major i have, missing a beat like a gasser does when a fouled plug, and is doing a diesel version of backfiring, shooting a flame out the exhaust pipe, also there is a backdraft at the intake,, checked and readjusted the valve adjustment, still no change..
Last resort im thinking burnt valves ??
watcha all think?

Perfect time for this discussion, b/c I'm dealing with the same exact thing....Novice to diesels...had my injector pump completely rebuilt and just slapped it on there. Did not even think about timing. How do I fix my timing on my Super Major? Have never done it. Thanks, BOB

How much did pump rebuild cost, where did you get it done?
I just did a timing check on mine and that wasnt the problem.
Is your FSM a vacuum goveronor or mechanical(mimec)?
Ill poste timing procedure accordingly.

Cost me way too much, but I need to get all this steel moving so I can build my house. $1200... from Mitchcon in Denver, CO. Included new cam from Bosch. Jim is the owner,303) 399-5741 Nice guy, tell him Bob w/ the old Simms sent you. the only other used one I could find was in England and for some legal reasons they could not sell it to me. Don't know for sure, but tend to think it's mechanical. I don't know of any vacuum lines running in. Thanks for the help. Gonna go right now and see what happens with a 180 turn on it.

if it is vacuum it will have to steel pipes running to the front of the pump , up to the intake manifold.
If your Sn on tractor is 08b-756398 or higher it should be minimec mechanical.
number 1 (front) piston should be coming up on compression stroke,(can be determined by valve movenents). Through the timing hole in bell housing on right side just under frame rail, the timing should be 21 degrees BTDC,(marks on flywheel through bellhousing hole)
There is a noch mark on your pump drive flange, and this should come into alignment with the pointer indicator tab attached to the upper bolt at the immediate left of the drive coulper.
When these 4 marks are aligned at the same time, timing is correct.

vacuum procedure is same except that btdc is 16-19 degrees.

When you had the head off, did you check the liner protrusion? If you have a low liner, combustion gases will still escape into the cooling system, even with a new head gasket. Mine had a backfire and flames out of the exhaust and it also blew water out the radiator overflow, except when the water was really low.
It might not hurt to check the timing, too.

Have you checked the timing ??

Sounds like she might be 180 degrees out.

Scott

The easy way to check to see if you're 180 out, is to look at the injector pump coupler. If the bolt that holds the front half of the coupler on to the shaft is up when the marks are lined up on the pump, then its 180 out. If the bolt is on the bottom, then its timed right ( if the pointer on the flywheel is at 23*).

Timing is 26* BTDC for a Major and 23* for a Power Major.
