Just bought a Fordson Major year unknown, 4cyl diesel Simms pump, has been stored for a few years with the hand brake on. Don't know much about Fordsons so maybe you guys can help me out. Has drum brakes mounted on extension housings forward of the axle housings. What is the best way to get this brake unstuck? (tractor not running yet)

Thanks in advance,
PaulN

Paul, from what you write I'm not sure if the hand brake is stuck or the right rear wheel brake. The hand brake, as I understand it, works in conjunction with the gear box. I have heard, from experienced contributors to this site, that the hand brake on the Fordson Super should never be used. Apparently it has a history of sticking, and takes a great deal of effort to free once it has stuck. I've had my '62 FSM for three years, and have refrained from using the hand brake.

If it is your hand brake that is stuck, you are in good company with many others.

Thanks Jim,
Just what I thought. Man, are those loaded tires heavy. Looks like a good weather job to me.

Remove the rear wheel to have complete access to the brake and drum. Fordson brake is just like the old car brakes. Clean up things on the inside with a good degreaser. You can access the brake ajustment from the rear plate via a hole.
Loosen the brake making sure the springs are free and the brake band is not stuck. Look at the band and make sure you have some band left as they wear out just like cars. Put the drum back on and ajust the brake till it's just braking and then install the rear wheel. Next just insert a screw driver in the hole and ajust the band until it stops to your satisfaction. You can do this with the tire and wheel on but removal gives you lots of room to work and you cannot remove the drum completly with wheel on.
