I just picked up a Ford Ferguson - what is the difference between a Ford Ferguson and a Ford 2N? How was the tractor painted when new and where would I find the serial number? Finally a general question someone put a 12V battery in the tractor even though is is set up for 6V and now the thing will not start - would I be right in thinking the 12V burned out the coil? Appreciate any help you folks can give and be prepared for more dumb questions. Thanks

The 9N [1939-42] 2N [1942-47] were all known as Ford Fergusons as they were built by Ford & sold by the Ferguson Sherman Co. After Henry Ford passed away in 1947, Henry Ford the 2nd & his pals would no longer build the tractors under the "hand shake agreement" made by Henry & Harry. In mid '47 Ford brought out tht 8N as a '48 model without paying Harry Ferguson royalties on his patened 3 point hitch. Ferguson sued Ford & won. The 9N & 2N were painted a dark grey. The 8N was light grey & red. The dark grey tractors had 3 speed trans. & the 8N had 4. The 8Ns had a better hyd. lift system than the 9N 2N models
