I am doing a makeover of a 1/16th scale diecast 1927 Fordson for my Dad. Here is a link (hope it works):

Link

I have two questions:

What would the fan belt be made of? Rubber? Leather? Or?

What material was used on the steering wheel rim? I have seen black coverings and wood rims as well.

Thanks for any help!
Chuck

Steve, thanks for the nice words! Although I appreciate a beautiful restoration, I really like to weather my models to reflect a well used appearance. I have an album on Fordsons published by Iconografix that is full of great weathered tractors pics from “back in the day”. Thanks for the fan belt info, I would like to see the pics. I keep learning more all the time, seems there were so many variations. Its neat you and your family have so many and still run them! I have yet to experience a running one in person.

I will add a link to a photo of my Granddad’s Fordson with my Dad perched on the fender taken in 1928.

Thanks again, Steve and MF, for the help! Steve, I just may take you up on that photo offer!

Chuck

Chuck -- Couldn't get the link to work, but if you're working on a 1927 Fordson F, the steering wheel would be black (by that time Ford was using a hard rubber for the steering wheel rim), and the fan belt could be leather (with metal belt lacing splicing the ends together), fabric (sort of like cotton canvas webbing), or genuine rubber (that's about the same color as one of those pinkish pencil erasers, but a bit lighter).

Other than that, you probably know the rest: bright red wheels, and the rest of the tractor whitish-gray, except for the steering wheel spider, toolbox, seat and seat spring, crank, coil box, control rods and linkages, fan and manifold -- which are black enamel.

For a better look, go to the "Galleries" section at the left of this page, then click on "Tractor Photos" and put "Fordson" in the search box.

Thanks very much for the info! That is exactly what I was looking for! Not sure about a pink fan belt though (grin).

Sorry about the link not working. If you copy and paste the adress into the browser search, hopefully it will work.

Thanks again!

Chuck

That model fordson looks awsome!! I have a few fordsons and have always prefered them in their working clothes. I have a 1922 with a front mounted saw buck that I purchased from the original owners widow. It had about 2" of built up sawdust and oil/grease all over, with the wheels bent up from running over rocks. I fell in love at fist sight! You are doing a great job, I'd love to see it all done.
As for fan belt, My 1922 has an original factory belt (I think it was maybe replaced in the 1930's)that has the fordson name printed right on it. This is a Black endless rubber belt. I have seen remains of pinkish red rubber belts that maine fordson described on fordsons also, but agree it would look a little odd.
I will take a picture of the belt I have with the logo and email it to you. Also if you need any closeup pictures let me know. My fordsons are mechanically restored, but I still use them and they have oil, grease and dirt on them. In my family we have over 20 and the neighbor has about 8 more so about any part of any year is possible to get. Keep up the great work!

Chuck --

The link worked this time; what a great job!

I thought I was looking at Gramp's tractor after he came in from plowing, instead of an inches-long model!

One last thought on the fan belt (you didn't seem too keen on the idea of a natural-rubber fan belt due to its pinkish hue when new) -- the cotton canvas ones are a dirty gray, nearly black (depending on how long they've been out in the weather), whereas the leather ones are blackish-brown.

Thanks for the link to your project!

Thanks! Thanks for the color info too. The model came with a black rubber belt, and I wasn’t sure if it was right. I have seen the natural rubber version on a restored Fordson but I didn’t know what it was till now. It’s easy to find pictures of restored tractors, but I am not knowledgeable enough to know what has been correctly done.

Thanks a lot for your time and knowledge!

Chuck
