I have a 1950 E27N fordson major petrol.Have removed head etc to free stuck valve & grind. Also have removed magneto from bracket & magneto bracket/gear from engine.Have service manual but unclear on a few things. At TDC 1 power stroke do you just reinstall magneto bracket with gear into camshaft gear so as the lugs on driving shaft are vertical? You can't see the O marks on the front of the gears with the front cover still on engine.I assume that at TDC the crankshaft gear & camshaft gear O marks are aligned, but wheres the magneto bracket gear suppose to be?Also I have removed the rotor arm from the magneto but unsure which spline to reinstall onto.I know that it needs to be pointing at no.1 segment of the cap ready to fire, but exactly which spline in relation to the magneto springing action is this. Can I successfully reuse the old head gasket?Maybe coat with some sealer?New ones are very expensive. Also could I maybe knurl the valve stems on the exhaust valves as they are very sloppy?Anyone know of parts scource in Australia particularly magneto bits points, cap, rotor arm, etc.Cheers Ian Baker Colac, Victoria Australia

There are going to be a lot of ney sayiers on reusing the head gasket, but I have known several old mechanics that have done just that. Some of the engines are still running today(30 yrs).

Spray your head gasket with silver paint, couple of coats, then just before you re-install the head put another coat of silver paint on gacket and install head while paint is still wet(tacky).

I can't help you on timing of a gas engine, mine was diesel
