FMD Engine rebuild question.

I am getting ready to rebuild my FMD. But I have a question regarding the cylinder sleeves. In my IT manual it states that the cylinder sleeves in the early FMD are sealed by an O-Ring on the bottom but with a sealant on the top. My question is what type of sealant is used for the cylinder sleeves? Thanks.

Sindre,
the Massy probably has a perkins diesel these have dry sleeves (the block contains the sleeve sealed from coolant) pressed into the it.
the fordsons have wet sleeves (coolant is in contact with the sleve)

Since you are allready discussing cylinder sleeves I would like to present a question in the same line. I will have to rebuild the 3-cyl diesel engine of my MF35. I have never replaced cylinder sleeves on any engine before, so I could use some advice on how to do it. Do you need any special tool to get the sleeves out of the block and new ones back in again?

Thanks for any advice!

Yes you need a special tool called a liner puller. As far as putting them back in, you should use a press designed for them however I usually use a 2x4 as a buffer and tap them in with a hammer.

Aaron,

I personally would get the orginal fordson manuals from this site. I have a full set and they run circles around the I&T manual.

I can double check for you, but there should be one o-ring also at the top of the sleeve also.

Scott

Morningwood is right, the I&T books don"t always have all the information that you need and sometimes they have the wrong info. All of my Majors only have one o-ring on the bottom of the liners. The first Super Majors also had only one o-ring. The later ones used one at the top and one at the bottom of the liner. I didn"t use any sealer on the top of my liners, but one that I tore apart had gray silicone around it.
