My TO-30 developed a problem yesterday. I was doing some brush hogging and after a while when I pointed it downhill it would sputter until I made the turn back up hill. After the 3rd circle of doing this it died. Now after it starts, it quits after 30 seconds. I check the carb, it looks clean and gets plenty of fuel. Spark is weak and battery is weak. If I replace the coil with a 12 volt coil and remove the converter just before the coil - do I need to replace the condensor?

You need to correct the charging problem. Take a volt meter set on dc voltage and see what the battery voltage is at the battery with engine at 3/4 throttle. For a 12volt battery it should be around 14.0 to 14.5 volts. If its a 6 volt battery you should have one half the voltage that's on a 12 volt battery. Your battery ignition needs a fully charged battery or at least having the generator working so your ignition has enough voltage. If you had a magneto it wouldn't need battery voltage. It will generates its voltage for firing when the magnets pass by the coil. Hal

If it restarts after a few minutes, runs 30 seconds and dies consistently, of course you need to replace the condenser as that is your problem 90+% of the time. Until you get a good charge on the battery, you will never know though.

If the battery is weak, why will a replacement coil fix your problem? It sounds like you charging system may have a problem. My advice would be for you to check out the entire primary ignition circuit AFTER you figure out why your battery is weak. Yes youcna replace the coil with a real 12V coils(NAPA IC-14SB ~ $15) and yes you have to remove the resisitor but you don't have to rplace the condensor unless it is bad.Don't forget the ignition switch(Key switch)as these sometimes fail. And also check the wear on your distributor shaft/bushing because tha can lead to poor spark. You might try asking this question in the Ferguson Forum

Switch was causing my problem. Put a new battery in and found a wire loose on the switch. Took back the points and condensor to NAPA. Got the fields mowed, the garden disked and post holes drilled for the electric fence. Now this weekend when I go to the farm, I"m going to work on finding why the alternator isn"t charging my battery. Thanks for your help.
