I just purchased a Major. I think it was made sometime in the 50's but I'm not sure.It has a 4cyl diesel engine. How can I identify the year of manufacture? Where are the production #'s stamped? Also it seems to blow some oil out what appears to be a vent on the timing cover? Any help is very much appreciated as this is my first tractor. THANKS!

Look on the firewall behind the diesel tank and there will be a small plate with serial no on it. Let me know what it is and I'll tell you the year and month..... ...

Thanks for the reply. I found the tag but I can"t read it. All the print has worn off.Seems to have been printed instead of stamped. Do you know any other Identification methods? THANKS !

same question. I do know that there were three different productions of this tractor. FMD(early)PMD(FIRST REVISION) and SMD. It appears that some of the parts never changed.
