I'm looking at a Fordson Power Major tractor (diesel). First off, the tractor is in good shape, but doesn't have fenders. What have your guys seen sets going for? (I'll mainly be doing mowing on some rough ground and fenders are a good idea to prevent me from getting knocked off by a tire and heading under the mower.)

Also, are there things that I should be looking for when I'm looking at these tractors? I serached a bit through the archives, but don't see many "problem" areas of sorts.

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi;
There are two styles of fenders used on E1ADDN Majors.
1st - has large semi-circular cut out towards front to wrap around the brake drums (next to the foot plates) For MAJOR & POWER MAJOR 1952-60.
2nd - flat ends, no cut outs - Super Major has disc brakes. SUPER MAJOR 1960-64.
Cheers David

New fenders can still be purchased from Bareco, and I think they are around $250-300. Don't quote me on that one though. Been a while since I looked for them. Make sure you buy the right set though, as Majors and I think Powermajors had a different style than Supers (has to do with the design of the brake housings).
As far as usual problems, you will have trouble finding them as these old tractors are usually rock solid. Some of them can be difficult to start in the winter (if the previous owner used a lot of ether), and Lucas electrical is never anything to be proud of, but these problems can be corrected. My biggest complaint would be the brakes, which do work, but are not in the same class as a farmall or deere.
For the money you will get a very tough, very efficient tractor that will do most jobs you throw at it. We still use ours almost daily. It is just too good on fuel and too handy to get one of the bigger tractors out. I will buy another one when I find it for the right price.
