I just posted pictures in the Parts and Pieces section of a Fordson 6 cylinder diesel engine which is similar to the Fordson Major engine. I believe it might be a "Senator" engine, since serial number begins with an "S". It is not the same as the Ford New Holland combine engine.

It's a Ford 590E. The shaft drive to the injector pump is a dead giveaway. Truck engines didn't have it because they had a braking compressor between the timing case and the pump. They were fitted to lots of things. Don't think Claas used them (they used mostly Perkins engines, particularly the L-4 & P-6).
Very popular engine for Fordon Major conversions.
Cheers, JV.

Yes, upon further research, I began to think that this was what was called the Thames Trader engine? But your comment about the injector pump drive settles that. Are the later Ford combine engines what the British called the Ford "Cargo" engine?

The 590E engine (otherwise known as a 6D) was used in the Thames Traders, yes. And Claeys/Claeyson/New Holland combines, Hymac & Priestman excavators, Blaw-Knox pavers and many, many, many more...
They were actually one of Fords better engines, along with the 4D (the industrial version of the Major engine).
Cheers, JV.

Ford Cargo is the name of a range of wagons, which replaced the D-series in the early 80's and are now manufactured by Iveco.
The Ford engine used in some of them (different models had engines from Deutz, Cummins and Perkins) is developed off the 590E. I can't remember what the model number is though. They look very similar except the injector pump is mounted directly onto the timing case.
Cheers, JV.
