What is the purpose of the compression release handle on my Fordson Major Diesel. About the only thing i can figure is if the battery is low, you can release the compression and spin the engine up before throwing the handle to compress and hoping it fires. Just wondering.

my understanding is it is too warm up the cylinders before starting in cold weather by using the manual crank handle and should not be used to start the engine.

Be carefull when using compresion relese for starting herd storys of bent valves and push rods,I have used mine on my major with no probs yet.Talk with Brian Dye on the fordson page and he will say same, any half good major starts so easy its shouldnt be needed. it was stated in ops man. that it was for breaking oil film on cold engine cranking by hand only. This is the book not me, I hardly hear the starter motor on my major its starts so quick, In cold push in excess fuel button cranks a bit but not much. Great simple rugged engine.

It will save a lot of wear on the starter and battery. I use mine on 900 case when needed.
