S Dexta hydraulic failure

Since buying my Dexta, the lift arms were slow moving and would not raise all the way up. We replaced the return filter, cleaned the suction strainer and replaced the oil. The lift cylinder looks OK. On re-assembly, the hydraulics would not move at all, and no oil was produced at the auxiliary tap. Working the lift arms by hand had no effect.

We removed the flow control valve assembly from the top of the lift cover, and good oil flow was present, which I think indicates that the pump is working OK.

Is there a sticking valve, or what else could be the problem? I have no special tools for working on the hydraulics, so are there any simple things I can try?

Does anyone know of somewhere I can get the lift cover serviced in the UK Midlands? (assuming that is where the fault lies)

Thanks

It's probly just a sticking valve if you have any pressure under the control valve at all. Concidering it is full of oil.

Directly beneath the auxillary outlet plug, in the housing below the accessory adapter you will see a plug head pointed towards the gear shift, I think a 3/4" plug.
Takeout the plug and take a sharp nosed pair of needle nose pliers and pull the valve out to clean. All I have had a problem with, this is the most common problem cause.

There are 5 areas on a S Dexta.
control valve
safety valve
back pressure valve
unloading valve
piston ring, or rod broke.

If you don't have a manual, if you follow the link option on the left margin of this page to the "Vintage Ford Resources" page it will have some very good illustrations of the hydraulic system.

Dave,
Where in the West Midlands are you? I am in Norfolk over the other side. Your local New Holland dealers should be able to sort you out. Burrhead is right in saying you have a stuck valve in the lift but if you do not have the book to get a basic knowledge or some experience it could be difficult. E-Mail me if I can help further.I have had a bit of experience with these tractors.
regards

Brian

East Midlands actually, Hinckley in Leicestershire.

I do have a manual (FO201), and have a reasonable understanding of how the hydraulic system works, so I am keen to fix the thing myself if I can. I do not, however, have any jigs, pressure guages or other specialised equipment needed to test hydraulic systems, so I am limited to the simple stuff.

You won't need gauges or special tools to check and repair the valves. The 201 has the locations of all the valves.
Don't get over anxious on this project. The Dexta is simple enough that a simple tool kit is more than enough for the repairs required here.
