Hard starting/smoking

My father and I recently picked up what has been identified as a 54' Fordson major diesel. The only way we have been able to get it running is to pull start it, as it seems the starter cranks fast enough but it will not fire. Recently I have found that it will start with just a small shot if starting fluid but I know that is not a good way to start a diesel.

Along with the hard starting it does smoke alot when running. Mostly dark colored smoke which leaves me to believe it is running really rich. It seems to have good power, but maybe should have more. Also seems to have a bit of a knocking noise coming from the cover infront of the injection pump, but is hard to tell where it is coming from. I know they have a natural pump noise, but this seems to be beyond that.

I just need somewhere to start on the track to getting it running how it should. We have cleaned and even disconnected the air filter at times. The oil and fuel filters have been changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sir
I sometimes needed starter fluid in cold weather to start my Fordson Diesel Major. After five/six years I found the button on the fuel injector and have never had to use starter fluid again. In below zero weather I release the compression lever and crank over a couple of times, then push in button and it starts every time. Throw away the stater fluid and use the button.

Thanks for your help guys, we are just learning about the world of diesels tractors. If you could tell me where the governor diaphram is and how to check it, that would be great.

I cant wait to have it running correctly as it seems to have plenty of power and from what I have heard they are great tractors.

Also I am still confused as to where the button is for starting. I know where the excess fuel lever is for shutting it off is, but not sure of the other button you mentioned is.

Thanks for all your patience guys

There is a small button on the rear of the injection pump (on the fuel shut off). It can be pressed in to add additional fuel for starting. after you move the throttle around it will pop back out.
The knocking is the fiber coupler for the injection drive. It can be tightened or replaced.

Dave

Is it the excess fuel lever you are talking about that is used to shut off the tractor, or is there a different one?

Also where do I get a fiber coupler and how hard is it to replace? Would this cause the excessive smoking?

Yes, on the fuel lever is a small button that should be pressed for starting, is is part of the shut off assembly. It will come out by itself once the tractor starts.
The fiber coupler only makes noise and would not have anything to do with your smoke. Smoke could be many things, rings, restricted air intake, injectors, bad gas, etc.
