Hi everyone - new to this board, having just finished fixing up a grey fergie, we"re onto a blue diesel dexta. Now this tractor did run, though it was covered in black gunk everywhere and was badly in need of tidying up. The previous owner used to start it with a certain amount of easistart, which having read through a lot of threads appears not to be particularly good for the tractors long term health.

Having dismantled a lot of the tractor, we"ve noticed that the heater switch is missing and was wired straigh through to the ignition switch, so I"m guessing that"s why they had trouble starting it.....

I intend the replace the switch (if I can actually find one in the UK, they seem to be pretty rare), but my question is how much damage would easistart have done to the insides of the engine. I"m hesitant to start dismanting the engine block if I don"t have to, but I guess I"d rather do it now than later if there"s likely to be things to fix.

Any help gratefull received, thanks, Matt

Hi
From my experience it is a little like drugs, the engine becomes dependent upon it as a fix. Damage usually gets done to the top piston ring initially then works it way down to the others assuming someone has still been able to actually get it started. Broken rings over time will then start to damage the piston ring groove which in turn wrecks the pistons. The engine will most likely be difficult to start and will breath very heavily, all this means is lots of work stripping down the engine, machining cylinders and replacing liners and or pistons. Been there done it. With luck the tractor was bought cheaply due to this.

I would suggest doing a compression test on the engine, then compare your readings to the factory spec's.
This will give you a good idea of what the internal condition of the engines in.
I would say no more than 10 to 20 pounds max off factory spec and you would be ok.
