McCormick W30 Brake

My 1937 McCormick W30 has an ineffective handbrake.
I have tried adjusting the brake by tightening the nut on the threaded rod visible at the bottom on the handbrake lever (below the floor plate), however with no improvement.
I guess I may need to renew the brake band, however this is concealed within the main axle casting.
Can anyone advise the operations involved to access the brake and hence change the band?
ie. do I need to remove the main top casting of the axle?
any help would be appreciated.

You will need to remove the cover from the diff. There is a "T" bolt that has a nut on it to adjust the brake. The adjustment on the bottom of the lever is primarily to place the lever in proper position to the ratchet after the brake has been adjusted.

The brake on the W30 leaves a lot to be desired even when adjusted properly. I restored one and thought I had used the wrong lining on the brake band. Dad tried it and said it worked better than most. He said that when lining up to the grinder or threshing machine, they would first achieve proper belt alignment, then drive up to the grinder, pull the brake on as hard as they could, then back up to squeeze the gear oil out from between the band and the drum. Even then, unless they had a long belt to allow a lot of backing up, the brake often did not hold.

The interesting thing is that the Oliver 80 has a system that is very similar and yet it works great.

You might try your question on the Farmall page to see if someone has a cure.
