Greetings everyone! I am new here as I just purchased my first Fordson. It is a 59 Dexta Diesel and I realy like it. I have a couple concearns though and I'm hoping for some advise from the pros here. First it leaks motor oil from the dipstick hole when running...just a drop every few seconds and the level shows about a half qt low (i'm not positive it has the correct dipstick as I purchased it from a dealership as a trade in). Second...when using the PTO it has a frothy oil leak from the gear shifter. Third...when cold it takes quite a bit of cranking to get it fired up...once running it sounds good and has good oil pressure with no excessive smoke. It also has a Wagner Front end loader with a front pump and the coupler looks like it will come apart soon...does anyone know where I can get a replacement coupler. Also can the Auxiliary services be used to operate a wood splitter? Thanks in advance for any advice on these matters. Ken

Ken,

Sorry I missed your post and then came the holidays.

Our dipstick has a total inserted length of 7 3/8".
Maximum is at 5 1/2" and minimum is 7 1/8" measured down from the flange.

Has part number 0993851 stamped on it.
Fordson manual shows gearbox holds 13.07 litres or 23 (Imperial) pints. (I&T shop manual says 14US quarts)

Rear end is separate and holds 19.32 litres or 34 pints. (I&T>20.4 US quarts)

Some use the 15w40 engine oil to keep one oil throughout the tractor but we and others have used hydraulic/gear/transmission oil. Your choice.

Ours like to be plugged in now too. Even with the preheater and primer working.

When starter is slow have always looked to clean the ground strap connection to the body. The Dexta seems to have more trouble than any of our other machines in this area??.

(I&T says normal cranking speed is 200rpm)

Les

Take the dipstick out and have a closer look, may see oil popping up with fumes.classic symptoms of pressurising sump which is ring by pass, from a distance needs a ring job.

Hi Ken,

Welcome to the forum and congrats. on the Dexta.

I'm no pro but our family has had S Dexta since the early 60's.

I looked at our dipsticks and they have a bit of cork glued to the underside to make a seal to the block or oil pan. I meant to measure the lengths of the marks for you to compare but maybe later today.

Never had any trouble with frothy oil leaking. How's the level. There is a square headed plug on the side of the gearbox for checking.

For starting: Does the intake manifold pre-heater work and the fuel primer button?
How cold is cold, as where are you located? How fast does the starter spin the engine over when cold and what weight of oil is in the engine?

Hydraulic shops might have couplers.

Dexta hydraulics themselves are really too slow for a woodsplitter but hooked up to the loader pump should be much faster.

Cheers,

Les

Thanks Les, There's no cork on my dipstick...if you could measure yours for me that would be great...then I'll know for sure if it's the wrong stick. I'm pretty sure the manifold pre-heater isn't working. The button is missing and there is a toggle switch above the hole but it doesn't seem to do anything. Im in West Michigan and it has a hard time starting under 55 deg F. If I plug in the block heater 2 hours before I crank it, it will fire right up. Using Rotella 15w40 oil. When cold it only seems to crank at about 150rpm (less when really cold)...when warm it cranks around 190-200 rpm. I think I'm going to change the gearlube...do you know what I should refill with and how much it holds? Thanks, Ken
