Dexta hydraulics update

Okay, here’s the situation. 1957 Fordson. The way it works is that there is a control lever for the 3 point attachment that raises the back up and down. If you raise the back all the way up, you can use a valve right in front of the seat for the auxiliary hydraulics. In my case, that valve works the front loader.

When I got the tractor, the front loader worked, but as time went on, I could raise the back and then switch to the front, but it wouldn’t work unless I wiggled the control lever. The shifter was leaking a little milky oil, so I changed the oil, and it was really white and chunky. Put an extra gallon in the hydraulics to compensate for the front loader.

Last week the front loader stopped working altogether, so I got a pressure gauge to test the hose coming off the front/back switch. I disconnected the hose that leads to the front loader, raised the back, and switched the hydraulics to the front. Nothing was coming out until I wiggled the control lever, and then I got a stream of oil at about 320 psi, which is about right. So I worked with the front loader for about an hour, shut it down, and when I came back, I couldn’t get the front loader to work at all. Tried several times, but no go. The back raises and lowers no problem, but the switch to the front loader doesn’t appear to work at all.

What do you think?

Hi Dave,

Guessing that the auxiliary feeds into a separate control valve (or 2) on the loader? then:

You might try raising the 3-point hitch up to near the top (1/2 -1 inch from top).

Then selecting draft control. (moving the cast-iron lever located along the upper right side of the housing into the vertical or down position)

Now pull out the auxiliary control knob to direct fluid to the loader.

(I think this is right:....If the 3-point is in position control and the arms right at the top and they lower a bit from fluid leakage they will automatically try to raise up again and when they have the hydraulic flow is shut off.)

Well, not exactly fixed, but Les was right. To get the hydraulics to work right, you have to raise the rear hydraulics, then lower it a bit into a "neutral" position, only then can you switch to the front hydraulics. Then you need to have the mail control lever all the way back, bungeed, rubber-banded, whatever.

Works like a charm if you do it right.
