I have a 55 Major which needs some engine work. However the serial numbers are S752994 and I beleive the "S" indicates a replacement engine. How do I locate the correct sleeves, pistons, valves, etc.. to rebuild this tractor. Thanks

Thanks guys for all your imput. I do own a manual for the major and the parts on the engine appear to be very similar. Fuel pump, bowls and primer all look the same. I am going to do a littel bit of testing on the engine befroe i tear it down but at which point I will either measure or use your provided infromtion to order the correct replacement parts. Thanks

I have an engine with a "S" serial number too. I think it means it was an industrial engine out of logging equipment, combine, etc. I believe the industrial engines were very similar to tractor engines made at the same time. You can check the casting date code of the block and get an approximate time that the engine was made which will be a good clue to what tractor serial number would have comparable parts. You can narrow down the specifications of the engine by looking at various parts that changed over the years such as fuel injection pumps, belt width, etc. A good website for that information is attached. All significant castings on the tractor have date codes so that will also tell you about when you tractor was made.

Better to purchase a manual, there are little things which must be in a particular position ,e.g. pistons. "O" ring in block ,otherwise you will be guessing and that could be expensive. There is no indication the parts required will be other than standard,so pull it down and go mad with the micrometer.

I think he's trying to figure out which version of the Major engine to order parts for, since his engine has been replaced and doesn't have a tractor serial number. The were several changes to the Major engine during production and not all parts are interchangeable.

You will probably have to take it apart and look at the pistons and liners. If it has 1 1/4" wrist pins, order parts for serial number 1425096 and earlier. If it has 1 3/8" wrist pins and only one o-ring on each liner, it's between 1425097 and 1591022. If it has two o-rings on each liner, its 1591023 and newer.

You might want to check your local A & I parts contact. Just punch in A & I Parts in your Google box, then your area.
