I have been working on starting a 1954 FMD that I got in exchange for tearing down a barn for a friend. I"ve done a lot of the common work to get it ready to run. The question I have is where is the speed control? There is no fuel lever on the column, the only lever I can find without knowing what it is for. It is on the right side, Next to the temp gauge and goes to the block behind the Injecter pump.

Thank you Ed, Ken & Mark. Good info and it has helped. Still haven't got her started but she's turning over very slowly, so I think need a new starter. I have been trying to find out what the CCA is for the starter but have been unsuccessful. I plan to pull it and take some resistance readings. It will at least get me in the ball park.

To start her up you will probably need to use the excess fuel button , mine needs it every time for cold starts . it is a small button on the injector pump ,looks like a pivot for the stop lever it should stay in and jump back out when the engine starts

The Major uses a different sort of governor than you're used to. The lever that you see on the right side of the instrument cluster is indeed the throttle. It actuates a butterfly valve in the intake. Basically speed is governed by airflow rather than using a flyweight governor. There's a vacuum line that goes from the intake manifold to the injector pump. As engine speed increases, the vacuum increases and reduces the fuel flow. Opening the throttle reduces vacuum, increase fuel flow, etc.

The old Mercedes marine engines had a similar setup. A friend and I made the mistake of cranking his boat motor with the intake manifold disconnected. The engine fired and immediately ran away. It was probably less than a minute before we got it shut down, but is seemed like HOURS.

Have to look at my owners manual but -- Is it the lever to actuate the starter.
As I remember that lever was on the right side of the dash down about shin level. (but my wife remembers things differently than I do) !!!

Nope. Starter, the rod and starter actuator lever is on the left. You're right about being at shin level though.
