4000 SOS problems

I bought a 1967 4000 last year and this spring the SOS trans started acting up. First thing I noticed was that I"d start the tractor up and at first it wouldn"t want to back up. The tractor would just slowly creep forward even when R1 or R2 was selected. After awhile it would then start working. More recently was taking even longer before the transmission would work.

Here"s what I"ve done. I got a 5 gallon bucket of fresh oil and picked up a 309735 filter for the transmission. I"m planning on changing the oil and cleaning the pickup screen and replacing the filter.

Would be nice if that is all it takes, but what do I do next if the SOS is still not working correctly? Are pressure guages the next step or can a person try adjusting the bands without having a pressure guage?
