Fordson Major questions.

Hello all, I don't know if I'm going about this the right way, but here goes;

The first tractor I ever drove was a Fordson Major diesel,in the early 60's on the farm in England.
I have been looking for one here in western Canada, but they seem a bit scarce!
I did find one, but the transmition wailed like a banshee.

Question one;

Did they all do that and I'd forgotten?
Or is it badly worn?
Or do you reckon it has thinner oil in the rear end, as I gather 120wt is hard to find, and is this causing the racket??

Question 2,

what would be a fair price for one,....say painted up, but as brush job, and everything working, (engine seems V. good.)
It is a regular major, not power or super.
I know a lot depends on a lot of circumstances, but a rough guide to price would be very helpful!

Thank you for your time,

Richard.

Tires'n'tracks,

Re. the 120 wt oil, I was just going by memory, and could have got it wrong, it may have been 90 wt. Maybe in England one could get away with the heavier oil, but here in winter, it'd be a bit grim!

I think I'll leave this one alone, as it seems like it's on its way out.....and the asking price is OTT.($5000!!!)

Funny how these things work out, Another one has turned up, and I'll go & see it when the snow quits!! It's a bit tatty, but is supposed to run OK, and it's a super Major, and the chap wants $500!.....For that price, I can live with tatty!
I gather the grill's missing, and electrics are not too clever, but I don't mind!
If it works out, I'd hope to get it working well enough to use on rotary hay-rake this summer.....and light brush mower,...and rotor-tiller,....and post pounder...(!)

Thank you for your help and ideas, T'n'T,
all the best,

Richard.

Richard,
None of my Majors make wailing noises from the transmission, so I think there is probably something wrong with that one. I wouldn't use 120 weight oil in the rear end, because it is also the hydraulic oil reservoir and would be hard for the hyd. pump to pump, especially in cold weather. You could probably put 90W in the trans., but the seal usually leaks between the trans. and diff., and the trans. oil gets into the diff., so its better to just run 30W in both.
Is the trans. full of oil? The fill plug is by the clutch pedal and has a level mark on it. The dipstick on top of the trans. by the clutch pedal is for the diff., and you fill it through the plug behind the seat. If you make sure both are full, the noise may go away, but you don't know how long its been run without oil, so it could still be damaged. Good running Majors sell for $1500 to $2500 around here, but I would offer considerably less for that one.

Hi,

I noticed your reply to Richard and thought I may ask some questions myself. I have just drained and filled the trans with 90w, as you have said most of the seals leak, will that cause much effect on the diff oil?
I want to also drain my rear axle oil, do you have any idea how much this holds?

Thank you for the replies.

Yes, the transmition noise seemed odd to me.
Everything workd fina as far as I can tell, but these tractors don't have straight-cut gears, (like my Cockshutt 30) so I don't think it can be quite "right"

Thank you for the help with basic prices, it does help out a lot.

All the best,

Richard.

I'm not too sure about the wailing... I've had mine for 3 summers and not encountered anything like that. I bought mine at auction for $1500 with a bit of a starting problem, but I'd call it a great deal for how it runs. I'd entertain a good running one for $3000, but that sound you describe... be careful.

Can't remember the transmission being to bad as far as tractor transmission noise goes.Check that it doesn't jump out of 3rd gear (1stHigh)That is the only transmission problem I ever had with one, they were mostly fairly trouble free.
Check for a leaking head gasket.
Over all they were a good reliable tractor, they still bring good money to-day.
