I am in the process of changing fluids in my tractor and need to know what is best to replace them with. I typed in "oil" on the Fordson forum and got 1792 hits. I went thru all of them and got confused. I tried to find non-detergent oil and all I could find is 30wt. The tractor has not been rebuilt I know for several years as it been sitting a long time before I got it. So if someone with knowledge and experience please let me know what my options are, I would appreciate it. By the way, this tractor will only be run occasionally at home and at some tractor shows. In other words it's working days are over.

Thanks, Neal

Neal, I run nondetergent 30W or 40W in my Fordsons. You can get it in 5 gallon cans at most any tractor supply. Look in the dollar store for nondetergent quarts. I've been running them like that for many years with no troubles. Anything is better than what they originaly ran in them. They didn't have multigrades back then and it seldom, if ever got changed. You should not use a detergent oil especially if the engine has not been rebuilt. You don't want all that sludge and crud broken loose in there where it can get in the bearings.

Thanks Mr. Howe for your information. I found my oil yesterday and got it running again. I also tried to recharge my magneto with the info you gave me and it worked. I had to start with a battery but change to the mag and it kept running. I have met the man whose Father bought the tractor new. He had told he would like to hear it run one more time. He"s 80 years old. It makes me feel good to be able to bring his father"s tractor back to life after so many years of just sitting. Thanks again for your valued information, Neal.
