Good morning to all.

I purchased the super-major I mentioned recently, and both of us need a bit of help!
Had a FM when I was a kid, but the SM is somewhat different, and there is such a lot of knowlege on this site, I wonder if I may ask a few questions?

Question 1;

It runs, but chucks out vast billows of white smoke when started, and until it gets warmed up.

There is no cable on the fuel shut-off. Could this be causing the extra fuel to stay open?
There is no extra fuel button as such, I think the fuel shut-off has to be pushed/pulled to set it.

2,
Simms pump.

This one has a long tube attached to top of pump, with a cap which screws on.
The previous owner said he filled this with oil each day(!), until oil ran out of a small hole in the shut-off pivot....What is going on here?

I was under the impression that the Simms pump was lubricated with diesel fuel, but having read up a bit on this site, see that some had oil as a lubricant.

Can anyone tell me where the oil level should be?

3,
Decompression lever.

I didn't know that a FSM had one, our old '54 FM didn't. Owner started it by opening decomression lever, and when spinning, shutting to start.

I read here, that this is V. Bad!

Think I know the cause for having to do this,...Not enough battery?

I see here a high Amp-hours battery is required
p>(the tractor had a nearly dead one, lousey wires, and needed boost to turn over.)

I'll take some pics when I get it home, but it looks Rough!

Has "milk" in transmission at the moment!
Steering was very grim, with loader on, but have not tried it yet since we chopped loader off yesterday.

But still, I got this complete tractor, and another rear end with wheels, (Good rims and wheel-weights, but tyres no good) also front axle, two spare hydraulic pumps, (One for FM I think, other for SM,) a questionable Simms injector pump, (won't turn around, at mo.)
and a front wheel with weight mounted inside, and a few other bits, for $600.00.

I might find I have a few parts to trade for bits I need.
(need grills, and a radiator canopy would be nice, as this one has had the front cut off to allow mounting of a cage and loader. (was used in the bush for skidding logs)

Also need 3 of the four handles that fasten the hood (bonnet) down.

Thank you in advance for any help with my questions. This is a great site!!

Richard.

Sorry forgot to say I use I&T shop service manual ISBN Code No 0-87288-367-1 And yes I believe in its time it was the best tractor of its size in the world. It really could 'do it' MTF

Today I took out injectors to get them serviced, and checked the push rods.

Rods for #3 &4 cylinders are bent.
Tractor had been started for years usind decompression lever.

Q,
Should I just straighten the push-rods, get injectors done, set tappets and give her a try, or should I check out pistons, etc while I'm at it?
I'm looking at doing some work with it this spring if I can.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Richard.

TiresnTracks,

Bendee,

Thank you both for taking the time to reply, It's very kind of you!

The governor is the vacuum type, and I have yet to look at the serial number, I'll try and take a picture of the set-up and show you what it looks like.
I will have a look, as I don't know wether it's a Minimec pump or not, I only know it has 'Simms' on it.

I drove it home last night, and it runs fairly smoothly when throttle is opened up a bit, but on an idle, it throws out smoke and misses with the odd back-fire and sounds terrible!!

p>To me, it sounds like pump timing is out.

Power didn't seem bad on the trip home, but the engine sound was "hard"

Do You think that the timing could be causing the smoke and back-fire and hard starting?

The preveous owner started the tractor for 15 years, by using the decompression lever.

Do you think that the back-firing etc on idle is caused by bent push-rods?

(Bendee, the decompression lever is on the front end of tappet cover.)

When I find the serial #, I will order the appropriate book, but may I ask;

Can you tell me if there is an easy way to check the timing without the book?

I thank you guys again for replying. If you're like me, time is always short, and it's very nice of you to spend some of it sharing your knowlege!!

Thank you.
All the best,

Richard.

White smoke indicates unburnt fuel, probable cause misfiring cylinders[GM book]
At serial no. 08B 756398 of FSM production the Simms Minimec was introduced so you will have to establish this.
You might have a Simms Minimec]mechanical governor]. The screwin plug on top left is oil filler plug, further down there are two more plugs on the vertical, the top one is oil level and lower one a drain plug. The chamber should be drained at 200 hours and refilled[to level] with clean engine oil.Discard the long tube because it should be sealed and he had it overfilled [IMO]
Should have a cable and excess fuel button.[according to the book]
Idling speed adjusting screw is just above the {looks like} instrument cable. at back.
Fuel pump bleed screw is under No. 4 fuel line.
Decompression lever.. Look at the front and rear of the Rocker cover for a lever.
HTH..

Hi Richard,
Do you know if it has a Minimec pump or not? The Minimecs also said Simms on them, but they had a mechanical governor instead of a vacuum one. If its a vacuum governed one, I think that being too full of oil may have a lot to do with the white smoke problem, but there's a lot of other causes of that, too.
