We have drained the oil from the hydraulic system and it was full of water. How could this water have gotten into the system and what kind of oil is needed to refill the hydraulic system. I have replaced the seals in the rear axles. These were leaking oil. Also, what is the easiest way to change the filter. I have removed the plate located on the right side behind the brake rod. I can see the filter, but there doesn't seem to be enough space to take it out. Do I need to take the cover off that is located under the seat? As you can tell, we still do not have a maintenance manual.

Richard,
You will have to remove the lift to get at the filter.
Water in the oil is either from condensation which can generate quite a lot or from dirty cans being used to fill it up or from washing down with high pressure washers and forcing water through the tiny holes in the breathers.
Multipurpose oil from your oil supplier is best. Does not have to be the type with brake additives in. I use Castrol Multipurpose for the gearbox and rear axle of all my tractors except for the 1952 Major which still has the oil supplied by the factory in both.
regards
Brian
