My son and just got a 55 diesel major. We have put new gages on it and ran it for about 15 minutes. The oil gage was just on about 10. There is some gray or black smoke when we first start it, but it stops very soon. There is also a little leak from the head gasket, but it did not show any loss of oil is the time we ran it.
We would appreciate any help.
What should the oil pressure be? gene

Gene,
Oil pressure when new should have been 30 to 40 psi at 1500 rpm. Allowing for Anno Domini I would expect between 20 and 30psi with new oil 20/30W and filter. As the revs drop then the pressure will go down to around 10psi. If it runs around 10psi at 1500 rpm suspect oil pump, camshaft bearings or main bearings. My 1952 Major runs happily between 10psi to 20psi.
Head gasket is not a big job. White smoke might indicate water seep into the cylinders or just general wear. White gunge in the Oil filler cap might also be present if head gasket has a leak. White oil means faulty liner seals.
regards
Brian

The entire time I farmed with a Fordson Major in the early 60s I never saw more then 15 lbs on ours. When hot it had less. It worried me constantly. In 1999 a friend who had also run the same tractor helped me get it started. It still has low oil pressure.
