I have what I believe is a Fordson Power Major
(emblems include "live pto live hydrolics" and
Fordson Power Major"). What I'd like to know
is what is the serial number and what year was
it manufactured.

On the left side of the diesel engine above the
injector and below the lines that go into th block is stamped the following S434957

Anyone have any idea what year this is? Any hints
where else I might look for a serial number since
this does not seem to match the list of Fordson Power Major serial numbers found at>Link

Thanks,

John,
Sounds like someone has fitted a replacement engine from an industrial application.
Try the plate on the front of the battery box for the original number.

Brian

There is a plate on the engine side of the battery
box that says "Ford...manufacture...patents..etc"
but no serial number that I can see. Any other
hints. I can find nothing in side the battery box itself.

Thanks,

John

John,
The number should be stamped on the plate at the bottom and is pretty small. The first Power Major was Number 1481091 in August 1958 and the last 1578885 was built in late November 1960. Up to January 1960, the angle of the throttle lever was more anticlockwise, ie much higher up the arc of the steering wheel than later tractors so this may give you another clue as to year.

Brian

John:

Brian is correct, your engine is not original to your Power Major. Fordson 220 cid power plants were used in a variety of applications, including being sold to other companies such as County, Muir-Hill and Roadless for conversions. An engine, drive train, axle assembly sold to these companys were referred to as skid units. The engines in these units had a serial number beginning with S. I have never discovered any reputable information on the date of manufacture legend for skid units coming out of the Dagenham assembly plant. County Commercial Cars LTD had records of their skid units delivered, but the records were destroyed in a fire in the 70's. I believe the Fordson Power Major was introduced in late 1957 as a 58 Model and were continued into the early sixties. If your unit does not have a tag on the front of the firewall just in front of the battery... it will be difficult to ascertain it's year of manufacture.
