I have used a three furrow Ransomes 14 inch and a four furrow disc plough with a 5ft cut. I have also used a 8ft offset disk harrow but you had to be carefull as the front wheels were in the air real easy. I have seen FSM's pull four furrow mouldboard ploughs but I have not used one.

They pull real hard for their HP, around 54. I reckon they pull harder than a 62hp Ford 4000 but not as strong as Ford 5000. I would put one up against a Massey Ferguson 165.

Obviously horse power for a tractor this size is not as high as later machines in the same weight class so the PTO Hp is more limited. My tractor is a 62 FSM with a raised PTO. This type of PTO requires 1600RPM engine for 540RPM PTO as opposed to 1200RPM engine for 540 RPM PTO on the standard pto. This gives a PTO hp advantage. The grey wing or "New Performance" Super Major had revised PTO and diff ratios and the standard/raised pto on this model were the same.

dr step,
The most common plough used behind a Super here in Norfolk England was a Ransomes TS82 one way. This is a reasonably heavy plough, can be set to either 12" or 14" furrows and will plough happily down to 12". The Super handles this with ease. In heavy land we used to use steel rear wheels to get traction and still the Super would pull. I have seen a Super with the lower geared rear axle, (marked 3.3 on a machined three sided area in front of the lift houseing) pull three 12" furrows on heavy clay, using "Rotopeds". HP is around 52. The weak point which will fail after very hard work and engaging the dif. lock when one wheel is spinning, are the teeth on the bull pinion shafts and reduction gears.

Brian

Here in WNY I have used a 3 bottom Oliver 14" trailer plow, and the Fordson liked to pull it. It had no trouble with a heavy 9 foot Allis disc
harrow either.
They only thing it struggled with was my 9' MC
flail mower. But my Ford 5000 struggles with that
in heavy hay also.
