Hi,
I have just made a deal to buy a 1959 Fordson Power Major. This tractor has been sitting outside for over five years. Currently it is under a foot of snow. When we recently hooked it up to a new battery... it sprang into life after a few seconds of cranking. We ran it only very briefly.

My question is, before I move this tractor (to drive it home!) I should presumably change the engine oil and filter? What about the oil in the back axle / hydraulics? Will a few miles hurt if some meltwater / rain has got in here?

Is there anything else I should bear in mind before moving this tractor?

Many thanks

J-P.

If I were you I'd do a couple of things:
-replace the fuel in the fuel tank (probably has water in it);
-check if the engine has sufficient oil, and if this oil isn't milky-white. If it is, there's water in there and you'd do best to replace engine oil;
-check if there's oil in the oil-bath air filter. If it's water instead of oil, or if it's dried up, don't start the engine.
-check to see if the coolant isn't frozen. If it is, the engine is likely to be damaged by frost. In that case, don't start the engine and move the tractor on a trailer. If it isn't frozen, make sure there's enough coolant in there.
-check to see if the gear box has sufficient oil (remove the tiny plug; if oil runs out, it's OK). If there's water in this oil, change it after you're home.
-same as above for the rear axle;
-start the engine and run it at 800 or 1000 rpm (no more) for a while. Listen closely for any mechanical noises that you don't like. Does it run smoothly? No water, fuel or oil leakages from seals, gaskets or hoses? Does the engine stop venting blue or black smoke through the exhaust after a while (as it should)?
-are the tires sufficiently pressurized?

If all this checks out allright, then you can move the tractor and be relatively sure you'll get it home safely. Just be sure to check if the brakes and steering gear work properly before heading out to the road!

Thanks very much for the reply.

Can you explain about the air filter? What's it like? I think there may be no filter fitted at present. Incidentally, When we ran the engine we had to remove the air intake system from the manifold to choke the engine out as the fuel cut off on the pump had frozen up completely. We couldn't stall the engine either as the clutch is too worn. I hope running it like this for a minute or so hasn't harmed it.

Thanks again,

J-P

The air filter is a round metal container attached to the underside of the air inlet. If you remove it, you'll find a mesh filter inside and -hopefully- oil. If there's no oil, or if the oil is verty dirty with soil etc, then refresh.

Refresh the filter mesh, or just the oil? If it's just the oil, do I use ordinary engine oil?

Many thanks,

J-P

Just the oil. The mesh is a metal part that just needs regular cleaning (with some diesel fuel, for instance). It lasts forever.
