Hi,
I've just been to the local New Holland dealer, where they recommeded Hypoid EP 90 for the gearbox and back axle / hydraulics of a '59 Power Major. Is this really correct? Bear in mind that winter temperatures here can easily go below -20 C.

Many thanks

J-P

John-Paul,

Your CNH dealer is way behind the times. Tractor Oil Universal has been acceptable in Major rear axles and gearboxes of all ages since about 1957.This is according to the Fordson Service letters.

Brian,

Is this universal oil also suitable for engines as John-Paul originally asked? I have never heard of a gearbox oil that was also suitable as engine oil.

Karl,
Yes, Tractor Oil Universal will suit the engine as well, but some of the later Universal oils such as Agri-Castrol MP (Multi Purpose) have "anti sqwark" additives for in-board, oil immersed disc brakes. These may cause polishing of the engine bores in the older engine. I run my diesels on plain old HD20/30 oil in the engine and the petrol/paraffin ones on just 20/50. I use Universal oils in the gearbox and rear axle of the Nuffield and Ferguson TE20 but still have the original Vigzol oil in the Major gearbox and rear axle that it was filled with in the factory in 1952.
regards
Brian
