Suggestions please for flushing cooling system?

Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can use to flush the radiator and cooling system? There's a kind of oily sludge in there. Any ideas (nothing too scary please!) as to how the oil might have got there?

You are going thru this tractor from badge to hitch!! That's alright,,, we'll make a Fordson mechanic out you for sure. Unfortunately, the news is not overwhelmingly good. There is a good chance if you have engine oil in the radiator you may have a bad O-ring seal on one or more of the cylinder sleeves. There could be other opportunities for oil in the water. Hopefully Brian will comment on this also.

Well... the idea did cross my mind too, but it looks like the oil isn't fresh engine oil, just a dirty oily sludge. The oil in the sump hasn't been changed in donkeys years (aparrently) and there's no sign of water in it. We did run the engine for a few seconds the other day just to see if it would start. If this had somehow put oil into the cooling system, it would surely have been fresh oil we found, and if previously when the engine had coolant in it that coolant was leaking past the liner seals, surely the oil now would show signs of water contamination?

...or does it sound like I am just trying to cheer myself up here??!

PS I won't be running it without coolant in it again, even for a few seconds.

The oil in the radiator could have come from a number of sources. Head Gasket, Cracked Head, Old Head Gasket problem, Dirty
cans when filling up radiator.
If your tractor has a head gasket problem there will be other symptoms. Bubbles in the water, Water blowing out of the overflow on
the radiator, water blowing out of the exhaust pipe, hydraulic lock when the water gets into the cylinder and prevents the engine from
being turned over.
Fill the radiator and run your engine with a cover over the radiator to get it up to operating temperature. Run it for at least an hour and
see what happens. You may not have any problem and are finding evidence of old problems. If the oil goes milky, you may have
sleeve seal or corrosion problems. However in your climate the use of antifreeze should have elliminated the corrosion problem.
You could also see if a friendly garage has a radiator pressure tester. This fits on the radiator cap and allows you to pressurise the
radiator to about 25psi with a foot pump. You then see how quickly the pressure drops as this will indicate a problem.
I think that you have got to give it a good run and get the engine hot before you can diagnose any fault.
Most of the repairs to the head are easily fixed.
I had pin holes in the sleeves of my Nuffield 4/65 and it took the pressure tester to find them, even with the sump off.

Seriously though, thanks very much. I shall try your suggestions and see what happens.

Before I forget, is it OK to run the generator disconnected? I seem to remember that alternators need some load in order to remain happy, but I presume this isn't true of dynamos? The wires are hanging off the back of this one. In fact, 'mystery wires' are hanging off practically everywhere. And all the guages are broken. Can I use my electronic multimeter on the oil pressure and temperature senders directly to get some idea of what's going on, before I shell out for new guages (I'm still trying to save up for the rear axle oil!). If so, what kind of values am I looking for?

With you multimeter,select a low Ohm reading say about 200. Put one end on the oil pressure switch and one end to the block. You should get a reading. When engine is started the reading should disappear. Another sinple way is to put a bulb in circuit from the live (negative) to the terminal on the oil pressure switch. Light should go out when running. You will not hurt the dynamo if it is disconnected. If you wanted to "Jury rig" the electrics, DEAF on the regulator. "D"ynamo output, Large terminal on dynamo. "E"arth to chassis, "A" is power out to battery terminal on solonoid.(NOT the one that goes to the starter). "F"ield goes to the small terminal on the dynamo.Don't forget that this tractor has a positive earth.
